Separated from mainland Australia by the 240 km stretch of Bass Strait, the island state of Tasmania's largest city is Hobart. Over a third of the state is reserved in a network of National Parks and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Use Hobart or Launceston as your base to explore this island state.

Cradle Mountain - a rugged mountainous area with fast flowing trout streams and deciduous beech tree forests  This is an excellent area for hiking and freedom camping. This western region of Tasmania is one of the most rugged and spectacular areas in Australia, most of which is included in Tasmania's World Heritage area

Tamar Valley - Tasmania's second largest city, Launceston lies at the head of the Tamar estuary. Use this city as your base to explore the two nearby National Parks and ride the worlds longest span chairlift at the Cataract Gorge Reserve.

The Tasman Peninsula - 2.5 hours drive from Hobart is the colonial convict  settlement of Port Arthur.
